The realization of this impressive change began with a simple vision to design an outdoor oasis integrated with nature and modern aesthetics in a residential backyard. The began with a comprehensive consultation to gain an understanding of how the client wanted a multi-use room that can be used as a quiet retreat and also for entertaining. A rich combination of native flora, specifically chosen for their ability to flourish in the local climate, whilst acting as a refuge for local wildlife was included in the design. They included eye-catching, drought-tolerant species for year-round interest, and ornamental grasses for texture and movement. One of the major highlights of the was the installation of an iron bell centerpiece, handmade to symbolize harmony and peace. To complement this custom element, a winding slate path made of local flagstone meanders through the picturesque grounds. The pathway culminates in a fire pit area, encircled by natural boulders and seating made from salvaged wood, a self-described sustainable design approach. Their challenges were multiple, particularly the uneven landscape and drainage from the site. New challenges emerged: how to mitigate the groundwater they knew would come flooding back, and what to do with the water that might remain if not every inch of the landscape was incorporated into dry stream beds and native grasses. Innovative solutions, from French drains to careful re-grading of the front yard, made for a functional, and pretty darn gorgeous, landscape in the end. The outcome was the creation of an airy recreation space outside where the gentle tinkle of the iron bell create a soundscape amid the sound of rustling leaves. The end results were very well received by the clients who loved how the design was tailored specifically to their lifestyle and intentions whole allowing the native landscape to thrive with its beauty.
