About This Project

The "Modern With a Twist" project transformed a cramped and dark kitchen into a bright, open-concept space, perfect for a young family to enjoy together. Central to this renovation was the removal of the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, which not only created a seamless flow between the two areas but also allowed for the introduction of natural light. To enhance this infusion of light, we installed Solatube tubular skylights, which are renowned for their ability to magnify sunlight more effectively than traditional skylights. This thoughtful design choice ensures that the space feels airy and inviting throughout the day. Preserving the home's unique charm was equally important in this renovation. The stunning art-deco glass tile backsplash was salvaged and reinstalled, serving as a beautiful focal point that pays homage to the home’s history. Additionally, the gentle curves where the walls meet the ceilings were meticulously preserved, adding a touch of architectural elegance that complements the modern aesthetic. Craftsmanship played a significant role in achieving the desired outcome of the project. One of the clients, a talented carpenter, took the opportunity to mill old-growth studs from the demolished wall. These reclaimed materials were creatively repurposed as a treatment for the back side of the kitchen island, further enhancing the space’s character while maintaining sustainability. The choice of soapstone for the sink wall added a luxurious touch, blending functionality with style. The final result is a harmonious blend of modern design and classic elements, creating a welcoming environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The project not only met the clients’ needs for a contemporary family space but also honored the distinctive features of their home, encapsulating the essence of "Modern With a Twist" beautifully.
