The began with an in-depth examination of the site to understand the terrain and existing vegetation so that we could make the best design decisions. We embraced the challenge of adding many exciting new elements, including a bespoke stone patio made of locally sourced basalt rock that instantaneously pops against the green colors that surround it. The patio provides an inviting gathering space for family and friends while combining function and appeal. To make the area feel more private, while keeping an open feeling, we added mature evergreen hedges and some ornamental trees to frame the backyard space. This provided enough cover to keep one feeling shielded enough during the outdoor activities, while allowing enough openness to give the space depth and seasonal interest. Framing the backyard is a splash of color; a vibrant flowerbed filled with native and locally sourced perennials, specifically echinacea and daylilies. This addition serves more than aesthetic purposes, since it attracts native pollinating insects to the space and contributes to a symbiotic ecosystem. One of the challenges to address in the back yard was threatened areas that included drainage issues. Our team designed an innovative, custom water management plan to keep flow off the landscape while retention was achievable for the rest of the yard. We executed proper sizing of the French drain systems to maintain the integrity of the landscape and designed it so that it drains excess water away from planting areas while staggering low points of water. The end result is an outdoor space that is closer to paradise. The clients could hardly believe their imagination was becoming reality.
