About This Project

Michiana, Michigan Cottage Planned Environment Associates is excited to present our Michiana, Michigan Cottage as evidence of our commitment to high quality landscaping and design. Located in beautiful Michiana Shores, this successfully distills the clients’ expressed vision of natural beauty and designed sophistication. The primary design issue was to take an unassuming cottage property and create an intimate garden oasis in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Our cultivation team carefully chose native plants and sustainable materials that would work with the cottage and the local climate. The gardens contain a rich and varied combination of perennials, ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs and trees that provide visual interest throughout the seasons. Planned Environment Associates set a bracing flagstone path selected from locally available material that would meander through the garden and lead guests to a comfortable seating area outfitted with custom designed cedar seating. The garden involves a synergistic relationship with a selection of trees that add to the sense of seclusion while also allowing nature to exist within the space. Water management was an important design consideration. The design team creatively disguised a complex drainage system that would address flooding issues in the surrounding property, while also allowing the newly planted vegetation to thrive. Additionally, water management solutions were incorporated into the design to reduce waste and promote a healthy garden. The result is a successful balance of design and function that the clients love. Their cottage is now surrounded by a beautiful and lush garden that becomes an extension of their home when hosting friends and family or simply sitting and enjoying the garden space.
