About This Project

California Native Beach House by Gravel and Green Located along Southern California’s stunning coastline, the "California Native Beach House" honors the modern form while collaborating with the environment. Completed by Gravel and Green, this exemplifies our commitment to improving homes in some of Los Angeles’ finest neighborhoods, from Bel Air to Venice. The landscaping aimed to complement the coastal setting by utilizing fully California indigenous plants that thrive in sandy soils and require very little irrigation. Drought-tolerant California native species such as California poppies, beach strawberry, and coastal sagebrush were chosen to create a lush palette that respects the architectural style of the home and enhances habitat diversity. A significant challenge on this was the coastal wind and salt. To combat this, we created an ample windbreak with strategically placed native shrubs and grasses, which offered both protection and visual interest to the landscape. We also employed permeable pavers for pathways and patios to allow for drainage while also preventing localized runoff into the environment. The focal point in the landscape is a beautiful outdoor living area featuring a custom fire pit with built-in seating and native plants, all customizable and easy to maintain. This area also caters to indoor-outdoor living and entertaining as well as watching sunsets. The final product is an extraordinary landscape that not only captures the essence of California's coastal beauty but also realized the clients’ aspiration for a sustainable, low-maintenance garden. The intentional choice of materials including reclaimed wood for seating and locally sourced stone for the fire pit displayed our focus on craftsmanship and environmental stewardship.
