Santa Barbara Mid-Century Finished by Deanna Foster Landscape Design, the Santa Barbara Mid-Century is a beautiful tribute to quintessential California architecture with a seamless transition of indoor/outdoor living. Daylight poured through the glass walls, care of a mid-century silhouette, as the design of this house nestled within the Los Angeles heart met the unspoiled natural landscape. Drought tolerant plants, such as California lilac and agave all native to the state along with the rest of the landscape round out the design, which calls for designs that match the region, with low-water requirements. Visitors wander through the dense foliage on elegant paths made from reclaimed redwood surrounded by boulders placed to achieve a natural look reminiscent of Santa Barbara's rugged coast. Perhaps the largest hurdle we faced was the uneven property. Utilising terraced garden beds to overcome drainage problems, our team skilfully graded the site, adding a layer of topography to the landscape. A newly built fire pit area surrounded by maintenance-free gravel and seating provides a great place to spend evenings outdoors. Sustainable features also played a role in the with the use of permeable paving in the driveway and walkways to both reduce runoff and support the eco-friendly values held by the client. Artisan Planter Boxes repurposed materials are gathered and used to create custom-built planter boxes, filled with seasonal flowers and herbs that provide both beauty and function. The is now completed and the site with its now transformed house is a peaceful oasis which meets the wishes of the client by unifying ecology with aesthetics under the moniker of 'Santa Barbara Mid-Century'.
