The Earthship Farmstead is a remarkable testament to sustainable living, nestled in the picturesque Virginia mountains. Designed to accommodate the unique vision of our clients, this innovative home features a roof that serves as a grazing area for their sheep, seamlessly blending agricultural functionality with residential comfort. Our approach focused on creating a self-sufficient dwelling that meets ambitious performance goals, including net-zero energy usage, Passivhaus standards, and LEED certification for homes. The site’s natural topography presented both challenges and opportunities. We thoughtfully integrated the house into the hillside, allowing it to harmonize with the landscape while optimizing energy efficiency. The floor plan was carefully crafted to follow the contours of the field, ensuring minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment. To maximize passive solar heating, we extended the living and dining areas out onto the crown of the hill, incorporating a generous bank of strategically shaded windows that invite abundant natural light while maintaining comfortable temperatures throughout the seasons. Craftsmanship played a crucial role in the realization of this project. We utilized locally sourced, sustainable materials wherever possible, reinforcing our commitment to eco-friendly construction practices. The design incorporates thermal mass elements that help regulate indoor temperatures, further enhancing the home’s energy performance. Each space within the Earthship Farmstead has been meticulously designed to promote a harmonious living experience, from the inviting communal areas to the serene bedrooms that provide a peaceful retreat.
