About This Project

The Grotto is a stunning transformation of an existing living space within a historic industrial building in Kansas City, MO. This project sought to create an inviting getaway designed for entertaining larger gatherings, hosting board meetings, and providing a comfortable guest suite. The design emphasizes warm colors and rich textures, which effectively contrast with the original concrete structure, a relic of the 1920s that once housed an electrical manufacturing company. At the heart of this space is an enormous custom-designed dining table crafted from reclaimed wood timbers sourced from a Missouri barn. This centerpiece not only serves as a functional piece for dining but also adds a rustic charm that evokes a sense of home. Accompanying the dining table is an entertainment cabinet, also clad in reclaimed barn wood, offering a clever solution for concealing modern technology. This multifunctional piece discreetly houses a television and a Murphy bed, optimizing the room's versatility without sacrificing style. One of the unique features of The Grotto is the clever utilization of an awkward space under the stairs, which has been transformed into a cozy daybed. This inviting nook serves as an ideal spot for reading, relaxation, or intimate conversations, further enhancing the warmth of the environment. The design incorporates a palette of warm, rough woods complemented by vibrant accents, creating a harmonious balance that breathes life into the industrial setting. The craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout The Grotto are evident in every corner, showcasing a blend of modern functionality with the building's historical essence.
