About This Project

In the heart of downtown Kansas City, The Mark stands as a testament to thoughtful historical renovation and modern living. This remarkable 23-story building, originally constructed over a century ago, has undergone a meticulous transformation, now serving as a vibrant hub for retail and over 200 luxury apartments. Our design team was honored to contribute to this significant project, focusing on the creation of the entry lobby, residential lobby, and social lounge, spaces that are both inviting and reflective of the building's storied past. Emphasizing the unique character of The Mark, we carefully curated design choices that celebrate its historic elements while ensuring a contemporary livability for residents. The renovation process revealed stunning original features, such as the exquisite terra-cotta block walls and the raw concrete ceilings, which we embraced in our design. These elements not only add depth and texture to the space but also serve as a reminder of the building’s rich heritage. Flooring selections played a pivotal role in achieving the desired atmosphere; we opted for terrazzo floors that range from pristine to patched, capturing a casual yet sophisticated ambiance that resonates with the history of the building. In the lobbies, we took inspiration from the original formal marble entry, incorporating similar materials and design motifs to create a seamless blend of old and new. This approach not only honors the past but also enriches the daily experience of modern residents. As a result, The Mark has emerged as an iconic symbol of revitalization in Kansas City, where historical craftsmanship meets contemporary design. The outcome is a harmonious balance of luxury living and historical appreciation, offering residents and visitors alike a unique glimpse into the enduring charm of the city’s architectural legacy.
