California Cottage by Sweet Smiling Landscapes Sweet Smiling Landscapes' "California Cottage" , a representation of rustic charm and modern sophistication, is set in the heart of Montecito. The serves the natural settings of Goleta, Mission Canyon, Santa Barbara, Summerland, Toro Canyon, Ojai, and Ventura. The purpose of this was to transform a well-worn cottage garden into a beautiful outdoor space that symbolizes the scenic beauty of California. This featured a plant selection selected around drought-tolerant plants, including native California poppies, lavender, and succulents that are beautiful in their own right and encourage life from local insects. Natural stone was used for charming pathways and a creative dry creek bed, which not only compliments plant selections but creates a way to manage rainwater. Locally sourced flagstone was used in the patio area to seamlessly tie the living space to the outdoor space and create an attractive area for entertaining. The site presented the biggest challenge because of the steep grade of the site and slopes of vegetation, but our team was creative in developing the grading plan to maintain the aesthetic character of the existing landscape and allow for proper drainage and surface water management to occur on the site. Our team custom-crafted terraced planting beds to mitigate soil erosion and create defined planting areas that integrated layering and textures that enhanced produced depth within the space. The culminated in an elegant outdoor space that works nicely with the cottage and surrounding environment. The client was thrilled! While this took a little longer, the client highlighted the combination of functionality and beauty along with attention to detail and commitment to sustainability. The California Cottage is another example of Sweet Smiling Landscapes belief in quality of work, satisfaction, and leaving a lasting impression in a community. The set a precedent paving the path for landscaping excellence in the footprint of this region.
