The Vassar , situated in downtown Rochester, serves as an example of our culture of craftsmanship and design. This residential landscape was an opportunity to balance art and functionality and we were excited to design and build it. The Vassar included a complex and beautiful landscape, starting with a custom stone patio made from locally sourced bluestone. The patio represented a durable yet beautiful gathering space for outdoor living. Surrounding the patio, tiered flower beds with mixed perennials and ornamental grasses were placed to provide opportunities for color and texture throughout the growing season, while also encouraging biodiversity. To provide additional privacy and a sense of peace our skilled landscape architects placed a careful mix of evergreen trees and flowering shrubs to create a natural screen that also hugged the existing landscaping. The property also presented a challenge ensuring access and engagement throughout the yard with significant changes in elevation. Our team of craftspeople successfully engineered a series of natural stone retaining walls, providing structure and visual interest to the landscaping. Our thoughtfulness also allowed us create multiple layers of engaging outdoor space including a cozy fire pit area perfect for entertaining guests at the end of the day. Our commitment to sustainability was also apparent, as our selection of native plant materials encouraged limited maintenance while also respecting environmental health. The final landscape added value to both aesthetic and ecological conditions around the home. Our clients were excited with the overall visual of the Vassar when it was complete.
