About This Project

New/Old Farmhouse from Ralph Williams Landscape Design Located in the beautiful countryside, the 'New/Old Farmhouse' landscaping from Ralph Williams Landscape Design brings together old world rural charm and a sense of new, modern elegance. Serving the communities of Acton, Ayer, and beyond our team was entrusted with designing the outdoor space around a historic farmhouse in a way that preserved its authenticity. The first step in the is a full assessment of the original landscape. Through this, we are able to find strengths and weaknesses to reflect on throughout our process. Our team faced the challenges of uneven site conditions in conjunction with poor articulation of outdoor spaces. We responded by designating a series of tiered gardens that played to the property’s natural topography. We established a plant selection consisting of native plants that have adapted to the local plant community and provide habitat for bees and butterflies on the farm, and also used plants that contribute to a more sustainable farm and community. Locally sourced bluestone was used for paving stone around the planting areas and paths as we moved through flowering plant beds to provide a tranquil place to walk. A beautiful wooden pergola using reclaimed wood as a focal point for outdoor gatherings strung with climbing vines enhanced the space further to serve as a place for modern family gatherings, mixed with the old. One of the feature pieces of the was a sustainable irrigation system, so every plant was established and thriving while also conserving water. And with great care, we also created the lighting design where we planned out the lighting and fixture options to light up the landscape at night. After it was completed, the landscape at 'New/Old Farmhouse' became a restorative space that blended historical roots with modern flourishes. Our very happy clients now have a useable outdoor area for when family comes to gather, quiet coffee mornings, or fun summer barbecues. The embodies quality craftsmanship while creating timeless landscapes that showcase the story of each property.
