This project in Ankeny, IA, showcases the transformation of a standard rectangular deck into a stunning, multifunctional outdoor space that perfectly balances elegance and functionality. The homeowners envisioned two distinct areas: a dining space and a cozy fire pit zone. To safely accommodate their desire for a wood-burning fire pit, we opted for a Concrete Stamped Tile made from DekTek Tile, providing a fireproof surface that enhances safety while maintaining aesthetic appeal. The design was thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with the backyard's natural topography, particularly the drop-down cliff at the rear. By jetting out the fire pit area, we achieved a floating effect amidst the trees, creating a serene ambiance for evening gatherings. The main decking was constructed using Timbertech PVC Capped Composite Decking in a warm Pecan color, which not only adds a rich visual texture but also ensures durability and low maintenance. This was complemented by picture frame boards in Timbertech’s Legacy Series Mocha color, expertly highlighting the fire pit area. For the railing, we chose Westbury’s Rivera Series in a sophisticated Bronze color, featuring a double top rail for enhanced stability and style. A locking Westbury gate was incorporated for added safety, completing the deck’s sophisticated look. The finishing touches included strategically placed deck lights, with post cap lights and Timbertech riser lights that illuminate the space beautifully at night, enhancing its usability after dark. The result is a one-of-a-kind deck that not only meets the homeowners' needs for entertaining but also offers a tranquil retreat for enjoying a crackling fire. This project, completed in 2019 with a budget of $25,001 to $50,000, stands as a testament to quality craftsmanship and innovative design, allowing the homeowners to fully enjoy their outdoor living space without the burden of extensive maintenance.
