Xeric Courtyard by Waterwise Landscapes Incorporated Waterwise Landscapes Incorporated is excited to showcase the Xeric Courtyard right in the heart of Albuquerque! Not only is the courtyard an oasis for the homeowner, but it also highlights the beauty associated with xeriscaping - demonstrated when designing and selecting plants that thrive under the environmental conditions of New Mexico - being beautiful, drought resistant, and low maintenance. The courtyard has been embellished with vibrant native plants such as penstemon, salvia, and agave that vary in height or color placement, ensuring there will be something visually interesting to see all seasons long. In addition to the aesthetic information of placing plants in a way that satisfies the eye, a drip irrigation system was also installed to use water effectively while ensuring a sufficient water supply to the plants. Gravel paths of a local material (rounder gravel, originated in a mind, purposefully sourced as horticulture-related aggregate) were used to enhance drainage but also provide another element of aesthetics while prioritizing beauty with a functional pathway through the space. One of the more difficult site challenges presented was the characteristically rocky, uneven terrain of the area. At Waterwise Landscapes, we were able to use some innovative grading to create an inviting layout without disturbing the existing ecosystem found directly below the surface. Flagstone patios and recycled concrete are materials that were to be low maintenance while respecting the sustainability of the environment. In the end we created a truly beautiful courtyard for the client's request for a low water landscape area while providing enough seating for relaxation and entertainment. The homeowner was extremely pleased as our design vision converged beautifully with our efforts to care for the environment.
