Nestled within the Kitsap Peninsula and the Port Madison Indian Reservation, the Suquamish Residence is a striking testament to modern architecture that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. This unique project spans 3,868 square feet, complemented by an additional 350 square feet of deck space, and exemplifies thoughtful design that minimizes environmental impact while celebrating the lush forest backdrop. Collaborating with a couple relocating from Colorado, Rhodes Architecture + Light confronted the challenge of a steeply sloping site that quickly descended from the primary access point to a rocky ridge. To address the difficulties presented by the terrain, the design team embraced innovative land use strategies recommended by Kitsap County. The result is a captivating "tree house," elevated on glued-laminated timber columns, allowing the structure to soar up to forty feet above the forest flo. This elevated design not only preserves the integrity of the land but also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding natural landscape, including glimpses of the distant Seattle skyline and the serene waters that inspired the name "Suquamish," meaning "place of clear water." The residence showcases a commitment to ecological stewardship through its construction techniques. The project features low-impact concrete foundations, ensuring minimal excavation and soil removal while incorporating simple strategies for capturing rainwater and managing stormwater runoff. This light structure is expertly crafted to blend seamlessly with its environment, enhancing the experience of living among the trees. In the interior, the contemporary design is reflected in the choice of materials and finishes, including a stunning bathroom that exemplifies modern aesthetics.
