Planning within the context of the existing topography along with planning for tiers of sustainability with plants, materials, and maintenance requirements. From this, we carefully selected drought-resistant plants to build resilience while reducing maintenance concerns. We chose high-quality materials including natural stone pathways and organic soils to bring forth an welcoming environment; balancing with the architectural style of the building while complementing the ecological context. The water feature in the Cleveland Botanical Garden standouts and does double duty-functional and aesthetics. Why have a water feature? The water feature provides visual interest yet also provides habitat for local animals. The simple pond aspect allows for a tranquil environment with native aquatic plants to add to the experience while benefiting the wildlife. The "sensory garden" is a children's garden, yet is tailored for an age group or an ability group. A place for kids to objectively touch, visualize, and smell the natural world around themselves - all presented and highlighted by plants that have flowering, fragrant herbs, and distinct structures of leaves.
