About This Project

The Modern Rustic Kitchen project transformed a neglected space into a vibrant and functional heart of a growing family’s home in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. Originally dated and cramped, the kitchen lacked connection to the adjacent eat-in area, making it less suitable for the clients who are passionate cooks and entertainers. The design intention was to create a bright and cheerful environment that would facilitate daily living and gatherings while enhancing the overall flow of the home. To achieve this, the layout was meticulously reconfigured. The removal of a partial wall opened up the kitchen, allowing for a more spacious feel and improved interaction between the cooking area and the dining space. Ample counter surfaces were integrated, providing not only functionality but also a delightful setting for culinary creativity. A key feature of the redesign is the eat-in peninsula, which serves as a communal gathering spot, encouraging family and friends to come together over meals. The aesthetic of the kitchen draws inspiration from a beloved piece of art by Georgia O’Keeffe, depicting a New Mexican landscape. This influence is reflected in the carefully selected materials palette, which combines natural textures with modern finishes. The warm tones of wood cabinetry harmonize beautifully with the sleek, contemporary hardware, while the countertops feature a stunning blend of earthy hues that echo the landscape's beauty. Thoughtful craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the custom cabinetry that maximizes storage to the carefully chosen lighting fixtures that bathe the space in a welcoming glow. The outcome of this project is a modern rustic kitchen that not only meets the practical needs of the family but also exudes a sense of warmth and style. The harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern design creates a welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal place for cooking, dining, and creating lasting memories.
