About This Project

The Mid-Century Modern Kitchen project transformed a 1979 home in Pittsburgh’s Bradford Woods into a vibrant and functional space that honors its architectural heritage. Our clients, enthusiastic admirers of the Mid-Century Modern style, sought a kitchen renovation that would enhance their family’s lifestyle while seamlessly integrating with the existing home. We began by reimagining the layout, opening the kitchen to the adjoining dining room and eat-in areas. This reconfiguration not only fostered a more cohesive main level but also created a welcoming environment ideal for both everyday family activities and entertaining guests. In our design, we strategically relocated the refrigerator and pantry to optimize workflow, while introducing a new kitchen island that serves as the central hub for cooking and social interactions. Custom open shelving at the island’s end maintains unobstructed sightlines, ensuring the kitchen remains a focal point without sacrificing openness. The choice of light oak flooring throughout the space lends a contemporary touch, beautifully bridging the kitchen with two adjoining family rooms, while providing a warm contrast to the rich walnut cabinetry that features slab-style doors adorned with minimal brass hardware, embodying the streamlined Mid-Century aesthetic. Delicate details enhance the kitchen's character; custom radial edges at the island and coffee bar introduce a playful element, complemented by matte green solid surface countertops. The backsplash and island base showcase a neutral yet rustic handmade tile that harmonizes with the original entryway design. Mid-Century inspired light fixtures, bold patterned wallpaper, and a curated mix of new and vintage furnishings inject personality into the space. The result is a sunlit kitchen that feels timeless and inviting, perfectly balancing functionality with the charm of Mid-Century Modern design, all tailored to the unique lifestyle of our clients.
