About This Project

The Backyard Entertaining Space project in Pittsburgh, PA, transformed an underutilized area into a vibrant and functional outdoor oasis designed for year-round enjoyment. The initial phase involved regrading the rear portion of the yard to establish a 12’ x 20’ multiuse zone. This careful grading not only addressed a significant slope but also created a “sunken” patio that enhances privacy from the busy neighboring streets, making it an ideal setting for entertaining guests. At the heart of the space, a pair of meticulously crafted Craftsman-style arbors frame painted swings that invite relaxation, surrounding a cozy fire pit that serves as a focal point for evening gatherings. The design encourages conversation and warmth, perfect for cozy nights spent with family and friends. On the opposite end of the patio, a dining area comfortably accommodates eight guests, nestled against a lush backdrop of vibrant plants and flowers that bring life and color to the setting. To further enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the space, we incorporated a living wall feature. The frames supporting this greenery utilize a system of removable felt pockets, allowing for seasonal changes without compromising the integrity of the design. At the end of each season, the pockets can be uninstalled, revealing decorative latticework that adds an additional layer of visual interest and charm to the patio. Craftsmanship was paramount throughout the project, with each element carefully selected to ensure durability and style. The combination of natural materials and thoughtful design choices culminated in a backyard space that not only meets the needs of its owners but also serves as an inspiration for outdoor living. This Backyard Entertaining Space is more than just a patio; it is a beautifully designed retreat that enhances the lifestyle of those who gather within its inviting embrace.
