Mercer Island Production Garden and Native Landscape-In Process Constructed by the Seattle Urban Farm Company, the Mercer Island Production Garden and Native Landscape exemplifies our mission of thoughtful landscaping as a positive interaction with the world one that is productive and ecologically harmonizing! Located within the Greater Seattle area, the was a sizable transformation of an under-utilized space into an interactive landscape that allows productivity and native species to coexist. The overall program of the involved the design of a deliberate parcel that integrated raised vegetable beds, areas for native plant gardens, and pollinators, all working together to create a cohesive landscape. Our team used high-quality and sustainably sourced materials for the various components, using cedar for the raised garden beds, and soil amendments from a local soil amendment vendor to enhance conditions for growing and production. A significant challenge of the was negotiating the unevenness of the topography of the site, but our talented team found ways to gradate and drain the site to improve conditions for soil health, soil moisture retention, and to control potential erosion caused by drainage to the lower wetlands. Solar water conservation was another installation to promote consistent moisture to the plants while also being conscientious irrigating sensibly. We implemented hardscaping, created pathways from natural stones, and areas to sit and enjoy the space and harvest, sure to be less impactful on an area that needed special consideration. This created a stunning production garden that met the needed function from our clients, but also provided inspiration for local sustainable gardening to share with their home as well. The design elements that feature native flora incorporate local wildlife and create rich biodiversity, all while providing a beautiful habitat. Overall our clients expressed they felt so excited their new productive space, and never imagined that it could be so beautiful and functional, which is exactly the mission for the Seattle Urban Farm Company! This is easily a showcase of our commitment to landscapes that inspire and last.
