Four Season Rooftop Farm This 'Four Season Rooftop Farm' was recently finished by Seattle Urban Farm Company and is a true urban oasis in the center of the Greater Seattle area. This pioneering landscape incorporates urban agriculture into a rooftop for community members to enjoy fresh food all year long. The design embodies a complex array of raised beds made of sustainably sourced cedar, all while utilizing a drip irrigation system which conserves water but also helps crops grow effectively. The design team addressed major obstacles, including the roof's structural weight limits and unsheltered exposure to the elements, by using lightweight soil solutions and installing strategically placed windbreaks to protect tender crops from wind. Seasonal vegetables, herbs, and a flower garden attractive to pollinators are just a few examples of the abundant crops that will thrive on the farm. Elevated pathways made of permeable pavers provided an easy way to access the crops for maintenance and improved the aesthetics of the farm. The end result is a beautiful, productive rooftop farm that not only fulfills the client's vision of sustainability, but provides community members a space to gather around and build a relationship with their food. The demonstrates the quality and originality Seattle Urban Farm Company is known for, and delightfully, the client is excited to share their flourishing rooftop for friends and neighbors to enjoy.
