Mercer Island Secret Garden The Mercer Island Secret Garden, located in the beautiful Mercer Island neighborhood, is a beautiful created by Seattle Urban Farm Company. This thoughtful landscape focused on transforming the yard into a place of new outdoor livable spaces in a calm landscape. The process started with an onsite analysis to understand the unique attributes of the prospective yard. The adjoining elevations created a challenge to achieving the client's site objectives of expanding spaces for socializing and relaxing while still maintaining a sense of privacy. Our approach used tiered garden beds; locally sourced stone for the retaining walls; and meandering trails to engage users, allowing them to interact with their new landscape and find its hidden secrets. The permeable pavers create beauty but also allow natural rainwater drainage. All of these steps are rooted in the company's commitment to sustainability and design. The Secret Garden includes a palette of native plantings for low-maintenance gardens and a biophilia center of a water feature that brings the sounds of a natural body of water to guests and serves as a focal point for the garden. Moreover, seasonal plantings, beautiful perennial blooms, and fragrant herbs were carefully selected for their contribution to colors and textures; and for seasonal bloom to impact the yards appearance throughout the year and provide food sources for local wildlife. Additional touches of custom, handcrafted wooden trellises with climbing vines provided interest and intimate spaces for guests to read and relax. The final step was to create an outdoor dining area out of durable material that would withstand weather, but still accompany the nature of the landscape without disrupting it. In the end, the Mercer Island Secret Garden is a spectacular space that meets the original client's objectives. It is a perfect representation of the Seattle Urban Farm Company sustainable, quality craftsmanship; design innovation; and respect for the environment. The delighted client can now access the Secret Garden and it feels like magic, and an every visit is like walking into a secret paradise.
