R W Thompson Landscaping for Carter House Landscaping The Carter House , located in the heart of Lexington, gave R W Thompson Landscaping an exciting opportunity to transform a traditional building into a spectacular outdoor living space. Our task was to enhance the property’s aesthetic appeal and functionality to achieve the vision of our client. What began as a comprehensive site analysis to identify relevant site features and site challenges, including the awkwardness of the site and existing drainage issues, became a collaboration with Carter House owner’s theme with tiered garden beds designed using high/quality natural stone retaining walls. This approach solved the preexisting drainage issues while providing an attractive touch to the landscaping. We used locally quarried materials to design a custom patio using bluestone, showcasing a beautiful and functional place to spend time outdoors with family and friends. In addition, we incorporated perimeter seating using natural boulders that created a wood burner fire pit that invites evening gatherings to enjoy the lovely scenery with family and friends. To retain the rich landscape appeal, we selected native plantings that included colorful perennials and ornamental grasses. We wanted to stay true to preserving their views while attracting pollinators; we did our best to ensure the new plantings were integrated into the existing timber for a seamless transition. As a result, the end product is a lush landscape that excites the Carter family, while being showcased with winding paths and gardens that outline spacious lawn areas with a calming presence.
