Ancient Greeks talked about something which refers to Philosophy Creating Spirit of Place: Genus Loci It describes the inherent qualities that lend character and identity to a place. Genus Loci never existed apart from the way in which we perceive it. What makes a place memorable? What design features make a place feel like a place? When we connect with genius loci, we discover the way forward in the home around us. I most often incorporate this understanding as a designer in the relationship that can happen between house and land or in any building and wilderness interactions. Because here in this margin, between built, and un-built, is where you have the greatest chance to fashion peoples perception and delight of a place. Their experience can be improved by as simple an act as making seating available at that location to linger, offering a little serenity, or making a space that invites interaction and mingle; or by offering a route with an explicit destination.
