The design process began with careful study of the unique topography and microclimate of the site. The designers faced the difficult task of designing a cohesive landscape able to withstand salty sea breezes while also feeling lush and welcoming. The team, with input from SCAPE, chose a carefully curated palette of drought-resistant native plants, such as California lilac and ornamental grasses, to offer both a sense of coastal living and sustainability. One of the highlights of the retreat is the entrance lined by a bespoke trellis with climbing jasmine that welcomes visitors into the sanctuary. A winding path of local flagstone meanders past colorful flower beds and under a rustic pergola to a cozy sitting area. Clients step outdoors to mingle amid the aromas of herbs and blooming flowers arranged for seasonal succession. At the heart of the retreat is a gentle water feature mimicking the soothing sounds of the ocean waves. A hand-laid flagstone bed pond, illuminated with gentle LED lighting and surrounded by natural stones, it has a soothing lull a peaceful place to unwind and think. The biggest challenge of incorporating this feature was making it work properly with existing landscape, and although the team did it seamlessly, they made sure that aesthetics never overshadowed functionality (drainage and maintenance). As a result, the end product is a stunning space that both beautifies the property but also acts as a cozy getaway for the clients and their family.
