Modern Hillside Entry and Sculpture Garden | »} Inspired by the work of Breaking Ground, the 'Modern Hillside Entry and Sculpture Garden' features an impressive approach to landscape design converting a steep site to become an entryway and artistic-residence. This combines nature and art in the beautiful hills of Omaha with the flow of the home into the landscape around it. Our journey started with an in-depth site analysis & studying the attributes & challenges of the site such as steep sloped gradients, soil erosion issues, etc. Drawing on our knowledge, we are using terraced landscaping with dry-stacked stone retaining walls built of locally available limestone for both stability and appearance. While these walls are functional, they also have a rustic charm, blending in naturally with the surroundings. Central to the garden, a selection of herbaceous plants were chosen for their colorful foliage and textures, providing all year round interest. Indigenous grasses and flowering shrubs were used to provide a beautiful balance of wildlife habitat in the landscape while also keeping its modern appearance. Permeable pavers, used in most of the curvaceous pathways, help keep runoff down while also generally making the design more eco-friendly. A highlight of this is a sculpture garden that features a selection of contemporary art pieces from local artists. The sculptures are all strategically placed within the foliage inviting visitors to stop and admire the artistry against the natural backdrop. The changing interplay of light and shadow as the sun moves across the sky contributes a dynamic quality to the experience. The sculptures had to fit well into the landscape but the task of Breaking Ground was also to not let the sculptures overshadow the surrounding nature. Well executed planning and placement led to a sustainable composition contributing to an inspiring feast for the senses. The end result is a stunning hillside entry that not only elevates the property's street appeal but provides a tranquil escape to reflect or be inspired. The client was thrilled with the result, commenting that the space is "a warm welcome home that celebrates art and nature in harmony."
