Beach Mediterranean Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture is pleased to share the 'Beach Mediterranean' that embraces the California coast. This was thoughtfully designed for a client with a desire to juxtapose the relaxed elegance of Mediterranean architecture within a beach setting. Located in the coastal towns of San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, and Avila Beach, this features a host of native plants mixed with Mediterranean-influenced landscaping. The garden provides a feast of color with native drought tolerant plants that include chubby succulents, lavender, and larger ornamental grasses flowing with the breeze close to the ocean. Uniquely shaped natural stone walkways, decorative terracotta pots, and restored eucalyptus trees add to the warm, inviting atmosphere. Thoughtful sitting spaces encourage outdoor living with beautiful views over the Pacific. One of the major obstacles for the team included the sandy soils that are in coastal locations that make plant establishment and irrigation a challenge. A custom solution of soil amendments along with a new drip irrigation system provided sustainable solutions for the sandy soils that also provides for great plant health and vibrant green growth. The result is a relaxing space offering continuity in the transition from the inside of the home to outside. The clients expressed their happiness at how the garden encapsulated their vision while naturally fitting with the coastal environment. Not only does the ad beauty and property value, it creates an inviting retreat for family gatherings and quiet evenings under the stars.
