Laird Residence - Historic Patio Space The Laird Residence in Colorado Springs has been designed and completed by J. Gieo Pensoneault, MLA, including a balance of historic context and contemporary landscape design. Located in a charming neighborhood with deep roots in history, this historic patio area has been re-envisioned as an engaging outdoor living space, combining a modern use with the classic style of the original architecture. This included a complete overhaul of the landscape, including hand-cut bluestone pavers that honor the historical aspect of the residence while providing durability and aesthetics at their highest level. These pavers were carefully arranged to create an inviting patio space, perfect for family and friend entertaining. Our design also included a selection of native plants to improve natural biodiversity and create visual interest in a space that focuses on the decorative hardscaping area. Thoughtful placement of low maintenance perennials and seasonal surface color were used to ensure color throughout the season, while also keeping irrigation to a minimum- the preferred sustainable environmental stewardship. One of the major challenges of the was to work around existing underground utilities and complying with historical preservation regulations. Our team employed advanced techniques and carefully excavated expensive plants while minimizing impact on the surrounding landscape. Our specialists planned for compliance with all the historical regulations while providing the client vision. The end course is an extraordinary patio that creates a functional outdoor living area and adds to the overall charm of the Laird Residence. Comfortable seating areas and ambient lighting incorporated into the space complimented by flowering plants created a vibrant and engaging outdoor setting where before there was neglect. The clients are ecstatic and enjoying a new outdoor living space to use for relaxation and gathering, while best reflective of the craftsmanship and artistic of work provided by J. Gieo Pensoneault, MLA.
