This balances beauty with function directly in the heart of Unionville Center, giving the Humphrey family a personal escape in their backyard. A massive paver patio serves at the heart of the with durable, weather-proofing materials that both beautify the area and prolong the life of its elements. This transition was architected with the environment in mind, so we chose warm earthy colors that integrate well with the outdoors. The decorative borders and inlaid patterns on the patio provide an artistic touch to the structure that adds to the overall aesthetic appreciated by the client. Next to the patio, we built a meandering path made from permeable pavers, which offers good drainage and helps keep it looking nice. The path guides visitors through a garden area filled with careful landscaping, a mixture of native plants, and colorful flowers that bloom at various times throughout the seasons for a yearly display of beauty. Tall boulders set it, mulched beds fill it, textured ground and height combined = very little maintenance. Our biggest challenge on this was the site slope. The team answered that challenge with an innovative solution, developing pocketed tiers of natural stone retaining walls to create flat zones for planting and leisure. Not only did this fix the drainage issues, the characteristic also added visual interest to the landscape. The end result is a enlightening space that not only provides the client with the perfect space for entertaining but family gatherings as well, exceeding their expectations, and my own!
