Narrow Oceanfront Lot by Wild Works of Whimsy, LLC Situated along the sandy coast, the 'Narrow Oceanfront Lot' commissioned by Wild Works of Whimsy, LLC showcases a fabulously functional yet attractive landscape solution for the communities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake. We were confronted with the unique challenge of having to develop a long, skinny lot while maintaining the harmony of the coastal landscape with the views of the open ocean. The design incorporates a multi-level succulent garden with drought-resistant plants that will flourish in a coastal environment along with a custom, handmade wood deck constructed of sustainably harvested Ipe wood. The deck was designed to be a tranquil spot to watch sunset over the ocean with a deck that can be utilized as an outdoor living space that has no limits. To provide some privacy while not impeding views, we crenulated a living green wall into the , composed of native vines and flowering plants, to be visually interesting as well as to attract local wildlife. To provide a space for visitors to roam and explore the garden, we built natural stone pathways, while a creative drainage system was employed to overcome the challenge of excess water runoff that is a common issue synonymous with properties on the ocean side. Ambient lighting was added at the end of the , creating a magical atmosphere for guests to enjoy and gather outdoors. The client was very pleased and excited with the finished product that provided a beautiful yet functional landscape that honors nature and leisure.
