Orchard Lake by Deborah Silver and Co Inc. Orchard Lake caught in the heart of south eastern Michigan is an excellent example of what we do here at Deborah Silver and co Inc. The owners of a small property of a quarter of an acre on one of our beautiful Michigan lakes hired our team for the task of creating their retreat on the lake. Even the small s present many challenges, and in this case that challenge lied mainly with the topography and soil conditions that come with our beautiful Michigan hills; each climate offers advantages and challenges when creating a garden. Knowing that we were operating on some of the most beautiful land in the world we began the process by carefully evaluating the site, understanding how to integrate our design to create outdoor areas that compliment and enhance the landscape type; and where to ensure the outdoor areas of the home would serve its users by being functional yet beautiful. We were able to realize our vision by strategically placing an assortment of native plants that not only flow within the local ecosystems but also provide year-round interest. We designed a beautiful stone walking path built from locally quarried limestone and led our clients and their guests through a maze of gardens bursting with perennial blooms, ornamental grasses and a carefully curated selection of trees for shade and privacy. A calm water feature was introduced to mirror the soft sounds heard from the nearby lake, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The slopes were so steep that we built tiered garden beds (locally-sourced, durable, natural stone retaining walls which were at once stable, induced no erosion, and blended gracefully into the surrounding landscape). We really paid great attention on the lighting design where soft LED fixtures were discreetly positioned to light the paths and key elements of the landscape, and at night the space becomes an oasis. The end product is a stunning home that sits naturally in its surroundings, which gives them a perfect place for both their family and friends.
