The Box House project in Madison, WI, exemplifies a thoughtful approach to modern living, skillfully blending innovative design with the preservation of existing structures. Initially aimed at retaining as much of the original house as possible, the decision was made to preserve only the basement due to the overall poor construction quality. This basement, however, became the foundational element of the new design, shaping the home's footprint and narrative. Nestled on a sloping site, the Box House utilizes its topography to create three distinct living levels, each tailored to specific functions. The main level serves as the heart of the home, designed for gathering and socialization, while the lower level is dedicated to play and utility, providing a versatile space for family activities. The upper level offers a tranquil retreat for sleeping, promoting relaxation and privacy. The overall layout emphasizes an open plan, minimizing circulation space to maximize usable living areas that align with the family's lifestyle and budget.
