The Donges Bay project involved a transformative renovation of a historic 1873 stone house located in Mequon, WI, catering to the lifestyle of its new empty-nester owners. The primary goal was to enhance the home while preserving its historical integrity, creating a living space that felt open yet appropriately scaled. The design approach was rooted in maximizing natural light and views, achieved by relocating the staircase from its original position within the house's footprint into a thoughtfully designed compact addition. This new addition not only allowed for a more fluid first-floor layout but also introduced a welcoming entryway, a cozy sitting room, an inviting guest sleeping alcove, and a dedicated exercise room. Each of these areas was meticulously crafted to integrate seamlessly with the existing architecture, ensuring that the home maintained its character while accommodating modern living needs. The decision to open up the first floor also emphasized the home’s deep window openings, which frame picturesque views and draw the surrounding gardens into the interior spaces. Throughout the project, the preservation and exposure of historic features were paramount.
