About This Project

Hydrangea Wonderland! We at Smalls Landscaping were given the amazing opportunity to turn a home in Valparaiso into a “Hydrangea Wonderland.” This demonstrates our dedication to providing quality and creativity while accentuating the existing beauty of the areas around Valparaiso, such as Aberdeen, Boone Grove, and Hobart. This consisted of planting over 150 hydrangeas based on their large blooms and a variety of colors, from pale blues to brilliant pinks. Each plant was designated to particular spots based on the client’s preference and each microclimate within the garden setting. Along with the hydrangeas, we also planted a variety of perennials and ornamental grasses to create levels and textures that engage the senses. We established natural stone paths and decorative boulders to create a coherent landscape while giving structure and directional guidance through the flower area (inspiration for further exploration). The pathways were constructed with local bluestone and set for durability, blending naturally into the surrounding environment rather than being obtrusive. The design team faced challenges, including undulating ground and existing drainage, which we were able to manage with a whole site-wide drainage solution for success. Overall, the resulting space was breathtaking and provided pleasure for not only the clients but also their neighbors. Hydrangea Wonderland is now a botanical retreat for family gatherings, complete with seating to relax and enjoy the flora. From beginning to end, we proved through craftsmanship and attention to detail that landscaping can take an existing landscape to a higher, prettier level. Smalls Landscaping only aspires to produce higher level work in outdoor living.
