Gabion Backyard by Stack Rock Group - Landscape Architecture Located in a quiet neighborhood in Boise, Idaho, the 'Gabion Backyard' by Stack Rock Group beautifully merges architecture with nature. This lovely outdoor space takes what previously was an under-performing space and creates a vibrant entertainment space, featuring custom gabion site walls that perform double duty as attractive, functional elements. Constructed from local stone in tandem with galvanized steel mesh, the gabions are highlighted by the unique character of the stone and provide obvious options for dealing with erosion. The design team faced challenges of changeable site conditions (including a sloped back yard) and drainage implications. To complete the resurrection of the outdoor space, careful design considerations around site drainage and changes in grade led the team to implement a multi-level format to orient the space to the existing grade of property and limits of drainage. The gabion features were complemented with a planting plan to embrace the traditional plants of the area (naturalized shrubs and perennials) and bring the area to life for sustainable wildlife. To further engage the outdoor living area, the existing site was enhanced with the addition of a large flagstone patio facilitating gathering and outdoor living with family and friends. The small seating areas; carefully selected and placed fire features; and the reflective warmth of light make this a casual gathering space to relax among friends around the patio fireplaces. Ultimately, the style of the is stunning; not only did it meets the goals of the homeowner, but it also provided space for gathering with others and a quiet place in the backyard for evenings outside.
