In the middle ofOak Park stands this revolutionary taking an infill site with a past as a parking lot and converting it as a new green space. The rain garden is planted with a mix of native plants selected for their ability to tolerate different amounts of moisture while drawing local pollinators. The varied heights and textures of ornamental grasses and colorful perennials interest the eye with strategically placed boulders and the quirky, donated bowling ball accentsall a nod to the neighborhood's bowling legacy. The had its fair share of challenges, with perhaps the biggest being the drainage at the site. To prevent this from happening, our team skillfully crafted a slight slope which channels rainwater runoff into the garden where it can tend to flood less and provide some moisture into the groundwater. Quality permeable pavers were used around to create access, retaining access while still enabling the water to percolate into the garden another step towards a sustainable garden. The end product is a beautiful rain garden, satisfying the visual palette of the client, but also providing a moderate system to treat stormwater. The transformation has been embraced by the community, providing a comfortable escape for people to learn native planting and environmental landscaping techniques. The Oak Park Bowling Ball Rain Garden may be sculpted of thousands of discarded bowling balls, but thanks to Anne Roberts Gardens, Inc., it is also crafted with a commitment to quality, creativity and environmental stewardship in the greater Chicago area.
