Anne Roberts Gardens, Inc., Chicago, Illinois, completed this under its 'New Construction' category, taking an empty lot and creating a beautiful outdoor oasis that is both beautiful ('landscape architecture enfolding an urban home') and functionality driven ('wildflowers sustainable designed garden'). In the face of a relatively new home with a contemporary architectural style, our Chicago team took on the challenge and opportunity to reintegrate nature back into an already vibrant community in and around Chicago. This had a great concept layout that incorporated dynamic native plantings for low maintenance and sustainability. We chose high-quality materials, like locally-cut bluestone for the paths and patios, offering a solid surface that is beautiful and provides a seamless transitional surface between the home and its contemporary gardens. Adding a custom water feature including a peaceful pond and waterfall that can bring beauty and a calming atmosphere that will be warm and pleasant to relax and contemplate Ψ. My biggest challenge here was an oversized with extreme grading necessary for drainage and access due to the property being so steep and uneven. Our team deftly worked around these challenges, placing natural stone retaining walls that fit within the land more naturally while also lending structural support. The end result is a beautiful landscape that not only fulfills the functional requirements of the homeowners but also enhances their outdoor experience. Seasonally blooming plants fill each of the varied garden beds, and the wraparound lighting provides a dramatic night-time view of the grounds. The clients were over the moon with their renovation, telling how the garden now adds to the appeal of their home from the street, but also providing a space away from the day to day, gathering with family over the weekend, or even just relaxing outside at the end of the day.
