Small Yard with Outdoor Kitchen This wonderful landscaping , completed by T.H. Norton Landscape Architecture, Inc., is located in the center of Walnut Creek, California, where our client is now enjoying a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our task was to create an outdoor space that is small yet sophisticated enough for our client to be able to enjoy time cooking outdoors and at the same time have an area to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The private outdoor kitchen is centered on stainless steel appliances and a beautiful granite countertop for cooking. The outdoor dining area is positioned under a modern designed pergola that has vines planted in between the rafters to provide shade, creating an area perfect for entertaining and gatherings with family. In addition to the outdoor kitchen and dining area, we included a selection of native plants and flowering shrubs that require low maintenance, expand and grow in the local climate, and can be enjoyed year-round for their beauty and color. A complementary and new stone pathway of flagstone was laid, which connects to a fire pit area for relaxing and enjoying evenings outside. With this particular , challenges involved designing a space in limited square footage and how best to complement the existing landscape. With proper planning and challenging solutions, every square inch is utilized, providing cohesive and flow space that, although small, can feel large in its use of outdoor space. The end result is an outdoor retreat that functions well with the culinary aspect of kitchen/new space and enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the landscape.
