Description of the Coastal Influence Completed by: Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture Located on the beautiful Central Coast of California, Coastal Influence represents a merger of landscape beauty and modern design. This was a landscape rehabilitation designed by Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture for the lovely landscapes from Atascadero to San Luis Obispo (and beyond). Coastal Influence features a curated plant palette consisting of all native plants, chosen for their adaptability to the coastal climate and low water use of the selected plants. Low-water succulents, flowering perennial species, and scented coastal sages create a sensory tapestry that is true to the environment. The use of stone sourced locally for paving and retaining walls creates both visual interest and a long-lasting response to the environment. A major challenge involved addressing the steep site-specific grades while managing to minimize alterations to the natural topography. The team successfully implemented terracing and erosion control measures allowing outdoor spaces to function while using topography as a design tool. Sustainability was of high importance, as was providing habitats for local wildlife. A rain garden was positioned for water collection and to promote biodiversity. Permeable paving was used to improve water absorption and decrease surface runoff. The resulted in a spectacular landscape that fits comfortably to the coastal environment allowing the clients outdoor spaces for relaxation and entertainment. Clients are pleased with the design of a high-quality and low-maintenance landscape that fits the character of California’s Coastal floor.
