Japanese Cottage - Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture The Japanese Cottage by Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture is located in San Luis Obispo's tranquil landscapes and embodies serenity and harmony with nature. This beautiful landscape was designed as an escape, melding traditional Japanese style with the climate and vegetation specific to the Central Coast of California. The design incorporates all painstakingly curated elements: a serene koi pond, graceful arched bridges, and carefully routed stone paths that draw visitors into the abundant greenery. Native plants such as Japanese maple, bamboo, and azaleas veer into drought-tolerant species, to inspire sustainability and create a peaceful amenity of a Japanese garden. Natural materials like river stones and reclaimed wood feel organic, and add to the rustic features of the cottage. One of the key challenges on this site was dealing with the steep slope of the property. The team worked brilliantly to add tiered landscaping, effortless to maintain the visual flow of the site, and used local stone to build retaining walls to stabilize soil, adjust scale to the house, and supply multiple zones with contrast and layering. The placement of light fixtures enhances the rich experience of the garden at night, giving visitors and patrons a reason to ponder on the beauty of the garden for solace and calm. The end result is an extraordinary landscape that not only meets the client's vision but complete the surrounding landscape and ecology. Visitors are greeted with the sounds of water flowing from the pond and day-dreamy leaves ruffling in the wind. The 'Japanese Cottage' has become a sacred space.
