About This Project

A Teaspoon of Soil by Merge Studio Located in Sonoma County, our 'A Teaspoon of Soil' revamps a simple backyard into an inspired space that speaks to the beauty of the natural world. This landscaping emerged from our client's desire to have an outdoor space that calms the mind and elevates the spirits while reflecting the agricultural character of Sonoma County. We sourced California native vegetation, promoting biodiversity while reducing water wastage. The design is made up of the nectar and bright colour of various perennial plants, aromatic herbs and drought-resistant shrubs creating a richly layered landscape that is still drought-tolerant. Behind the layer of native vegetation is a discreet masonry path, built out of locally sourced rock from Sonoma County that guides people through the garden's nature, landscape and reveals spectacular views of trees and hills. A challenge in the was the hillside grade in the backyard. Our contractor did a terrific job of grading what was an unusual grade and not very aesthetically pleasing. The new grade promoted proper drainage, as well as visually stacking diverse plant forms with slopes and curves. The final work is a stunning low-maintenance landscape that thrives in its own ecosystem - A personal space for the clients to relax, recharge, focus, and entertain. Every time the water feature (a small pool) is on, you hear a gentle trickle sound, adding the peace found in nature. The clients are now well satisfied with a beautiful, eco-friendly outdoor space that reflects their personality, taste, and values, and the professional on-site skill and craftsmanship inspired by Merge Studio, will create this beauty for many years to come.
