About This Project

Zen Backyard by Gravel and Green Located in Los Angeles, the Zen Backyard by Gravel and Green turned a standard outdoor area into a calming retreat that represents calm and harmony. Our team worked to design and build this landscaping for the vibrant communities of Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and beyond to meet its client's expectations of a meditative getaway. At the heart of the Zen Backyard is a stunning koi pond surrounded by sleek river stones and lush plants which provide a relaxing soundscape of trickling water. The pond is bordered by a grouping of carefully selected native species that contribute to the aesthetic of this while at the same time support local biodiversity. Additionally, the use of drought-tolerant succulents and grassd ensures that the plant palette is as sustainable as possible given the environmentally aware population in California. One challenges we faced was the slope of the property. Our team utilized tiered landscaping with natural stone retaining walls. These walls serve not only to stabilize the slope, but they also help to define various areas to relax and ponder. Each level of the backyard has welcoming seating areas made out of sustainably harvested teak that entice the client to relax and contemplate their surroundings. The landscape ambiance can be enhanced by the thoughtful outdoor light in select area's of the space which allows the landscape to be appreciated at night. The also includes a cozy meditation nook with a bamboo privacy screen and a pebble path leading to a fire pit for the client to gather with family and friends under a starlit sky. The final result is a successful blend of nature and landscape architectural design, establishing a relaxing retreat that is enjoyable year round. The Zen Backyard exceeded our clients expectations, and established a space for mindfulness and tighter relationships with nature through this combination. Gravel and Green was proud to materialize this vision and client relationships while enhancing the community experience.
