About This Project

Summary: Backyard Woodland Refuge Great Oaks Landscape Associates Inc. is excited to share an upcoming called the 'Backyard Woodland Refuge' in West Bloomfield Township. Our goal was to reinterpret a standard suburban backyard into a woodland retreat that incorporates both nature and usable outdoor space. We designed the backyard to feature native trees, understory plantings, and winding walkways for exploration. The fire pit is made of locally sourced fieldstone, creating a stunning use of stone to allow the homeowners to enjoy evenings around the fire. We specified eco-friendly permeable pavers for the patio to create drainage and enhance the design quality of the patio area. One of the challenges we navigated was the site's slope and lack of sunlight, which required smart planting. Our horticulture team specified shade-tolerant plants, including various ferns and wildflowers to keep the health of the land and increase the diversity of the landscape. A natural boulder retaining wall was installed in a portion of the sloping area. This helped create stability and brought in some depth to the overall landscape. The was successful in creating a beautiful woodland landscape that supports the integrity of the neighborhood's aesthetics, all the while being a personal sanctuary for the homeowners. The clients were very happy with the transformation of their backyard, which is now the perfect meeting place for their family and friends. It is the quintessential example of Great Oaks Landscape Associates Inc. demonstrating craftsmanship and sustainable landscaping in action. Simply put, we look forward to continuing to build beautiful outdoor spaces in our neighborhoods, creating areas where elegance and nature intermingle in harmony to promote leisure time well spent outside.
