About This Project

Small Courtyard by Interior & Exterior Environmental Designs Positioned between the heart of Del Mar and its beach, this elegant 'Small Courtyard' renovation by Interior & Exterior Environmental Designs reinvents an underutilized outdoor space into a peaceful outdoor retreat. The design integrates harmoniously into the coastal vernacular while reflecting our high standard of quality and creativity through landscape design. The design team began this process by looking carefully at the location and collecting natural light, reviewing existing plant species in the area, and creating a conscientious layout. The centerpiece of the courtyard is a handcrafted stone water feature that spills into an informal pebble pond; creating a peaceful experience. The water feature is surrounded by a mixture of drought-tolerant species, including the native succulent plant species and other flowering types for added color, that will provide beauty throughout the year and to maintain little upkeep or maintenance. Additionally, custom seating areas constructed using reclaimed teak wood provide one-of-a-kind areas for enjoyment and relaxation. These sustainable and aesthetic elements showcase the outdoor space's full employability in all seasons. The addition of permeable pavers offers an attractive appearance, while still allowing for sustainable water use to recharge the groundwater. Some challenges included limited space for planting and drainage; both of which were resolved by our experienced team with good design ideas. The end result is a successful unification of nature and design, as well as happy clients enjoying the outdoors. The 'Small Courtyard' demonstrates our ability to turn outdoor spaces into personal retreats.
