Patio on a Hillside by Jacobs Grant Design Ltd Located in the beautiful area of Upper Arlington, Jacobs Grant Design Ltd has completed the impressive 'Patio on a Hillside' , transforming an untapped slope into a spectacular outside living space. This meets the client desire for a calming space with incredible views while balancing functionality and beauty. The core of this hillside transformation is the lovely stone patio, made of locally sourced flagstone, which coordinates with the natural setting and lends durability and sustainability. Around the patio, we planted a lush tapestry of native plants and flowering perennials, which are low maintenance and thrive in the local environment. This colorful flora not only enhances visual appeal but also supports native wildlife, building a sustainable habitat. A great challenge with this was dealing with the steep slope on the hillside. We needed thoughtful engineering solutions to ensure the stability of the patio, as well as the safety of the clients. We designed a tiered series of retaining walls which used natural boulders to create multiple levels to create structure and continued aesthetic appeal. The boulders provided multiple layers for seating and gathering. To enhance the space, we installed decorative outdoor lighting to provide an inviting glow across the patio in the evenings so the clients can use the outside space well into the evening hours. An outdoor fireplace was included in the design to allow the clients to sit in a cozy family gathering spot and make all of their entertaining visions come true. The final product is a stunning hillside patio surpassing the client's expectations using quality materials, design, and executing the design. The clients are now able to retreat to their enclosed hillside oasis surrounded by nature and enjoy their landscape all year long.
