Island Cottage by Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design Situated on a quiet stretch of waterfront, the concept for the Island Cottage developed by Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design embodies the synergy of landscape and architecture. This landscaping transformed the property around the existing house to highlight its natural beauty and give the owners a peaceful place to spend time outdoors. This was coupled with a thorough site analysis, responding to the specific contours and microclimate of the site. Some of the first obstacles suspension scaffoldings to tackle the steep terrain had followed creative solutions around stormwater management efforts needed to ensure effective drainage and prevent erosion. We used stacked boulders and natural stone walls to create terraced areas where we can grow plants in tiers, improving both accessibility and healthy plant growth in areas that might otherwise be difficult to manage. One of the major aspects of this was the inclusion of native vegetation which is low maintenance and environmentally sustainable. We chose a simple and colorful selection of perennials, ornamental grasses, and drought-tolerant shrubs that will flourish in the coastal environment, beautifying and nurturing the wildlife year-round. Palms and tropical foliage were artfully arranged to create an island ambience. A custom built pergola providing the outdoor living space, constructed from sustainably sourced timber and add comfort and shade to family gatherings. A flagstone patio with a fire pit and ample seating made for an ideal social gathering space with sunset views. We also used energy-efficient LED lighting to accent the landscape, enhance safety and add ambiance to our outdoor space. The final product not only fulfilled the clients vision, however in actual fact went above and beyond to take their outdoor space and turn it into a beautiful oasis that embodies all of the “island feel” as they set out to achieve.
