The outcome is a planned landscape that equitably balances rustic and contemporary design while reflecting the beauty of the natural environment. Initial steps involved a detailed site analysis where JMMDS studied key aspects of the site topography and plantings of native flora. Logical design decisions were made to create a landscape that ties into the natural landscape. One of the highlights of the is the generous use of stones sourced from the area to create the retaining walls and paths. This also utilizes the geological materials, promotes longevity, and provides a rustic aesthetic. The pathway weaves its way through the garden, moving guests through colorful perennial beds, ornamental grasses, and strategically placed shrubs for year-round interest. There were challenges along the way; uneven terrain, and finding solutions for water control. These challenges were met with well-planned swales and rain gardens to manage water runoff while keeping the ecological balance of the landscape. Rain gardens were functional while providing welcoming microhabitats for wildlife, which supports the overall goals of sustainability. These examples confirm the goals of a rich outdoor living space. The rustic and contemporary qualities are further achieved with a lovely deck made from reclaimed wood that connects seamlessly with the garden for a wonderful backdrop of the scenery of the hills in the distance.
