About This Project

The "Kid Friendly, Mom and Dad Approved" project transformed a once cold and uninviting basement in a 1928 Minneapolis Tudor into a vibrant, functional space perfect for a growing family. With the imminent arrival of their baby girl, the homeowners sought a design that would be both child-friendly and suitable for family gatherings and guests. The original basement, characterized by cramped rooms and a distinct musty odor, underwent a complete overhaul. The existing slab floor was demolished, allowing for an excavation that not only increased the ceiling height by six inches but also enabled effective insulation to R-15, moisture-proofing beneath the new slab, and the installation of a drain tile and sump pump. A hydronic in-floor radiant heating system was integrated into the concrete slab, enhancing the overall comfort of the space. Natural light was a key design focus, achieved by opening up the staircase and installing a curved wall that directs light down. A full-sized, high-efficiency Pella egress window replaced a small existing one, and the enlarged cedar-lined egress well features a built-in planter, enhancing the ambiance. Creative storage solutions emerged from previously undefined spaces, resulting in a spacious living area with custom media center, built-in daybed, and bookshelves. The design celebrated the home's character by accentuating exposed beams and structural elements with playful color schemes. Repurposing materials played a vital role; the original glass front entry door was restored and re-hung as a sliding barn door, leading to a combined office and fitness area. The sustainable focus continued with energy-efficient appliances in the mechanical room and a thoughtfully designed bathroom featuring low-water consumption fixtures and eco-friendly materials. This meticulous transformation not only created a safe and inviting environment for the family but also redefined their perception of the basement, turning it into a beloved part of their home.
