Flicker by Matteson Landscape Architecture Located in the scenic neighborhood of East Norwalk, the Flicker by Matteson Landscape Architecture exemplifies innovation and craftsmanship in the landscape architecture field. This landscape was pursued to update a residential property and provide a balance of natural beauty and outdoor living spaces. Flicker's chief design element is the complex dynamic of hardscape and softscape. Specifically, bluestone pathways guide visitors gracefully through the landscape, minimal and defined native plantings, ornamental shrubs, and plants selected for their seasonal interest and maintenance. Permeable pavers are also used to enhance the aesthetics and mitigate drainage issues through sustainability principles. A significant challenge of the was the slope of the land, which was initially an obstacle to create accessible and usable outdoor spaces. The Matteson team embraced the challenge and integrated tiered gardens and a new retaining wall (using granite boulders sourced locally for natural feel and integrity) into the design. The design team's careful consideration resulted in built spaces that provide multiple layers of engagement with distinct character, from contemplation spaces to entertainment spaces. Recognizing the ecological and sustainability facets of the plan, a variety of drought resistant plant species and enduring rain gardens were added for effective stormwater run-off mitigation. As a result, the landscape is consistently desirable and visually seductive. The most iconic part of Flicker is the cozy fire pit area, complete with seating to enjoy outdoor spaces into the evening. The fire pit area was designed with intact trunk sections as the base of the tabletop surrounded with plantings that echo the warmth of the living area. Overall, this pops and creates an enticing space that invites family and friends to gather outdoors year-round. At the end of the , the clients were thrilled with their refinished outdoor living space that exceeded their expectations. Ultimately, Flicker is a perfect example of the quality of workmanship, innovative ideas, and consideration of the idiosyncratic values of properties that Matteson Landscape Architecture thrives on producing.
