The offers something much more involved, with the use of a native coastal plant selected for their resilience, ability to grow in sandy soils, and long-term ecosystem value, integrated into the design. Drought-tolerant plants like California poppies, beach strawberry, and succulents were used to establish color and texture palettes throughout the property that work in concert with the existing landscape. Amoung the unique features of the is the use of permeable pathways lined with salvaged materials, used for both access to the beach and sustainable water management. The pathways wind from one well-defined gathering spot to the next, complete with fire pits and other shaded community seating options that are intended to be both functional and relaxing. Dale Waldo Landscape Architecture worked with the coastal conditions, wind, wave, and changing tides during the process. In order to tackle these problems, the team used some cutting-edge methods for erosion control and added windbreaks with native shrubs planted in strategic places. The finished product is a stunning coastal retreat that is functional for the community as well as an enhancement to Newport Back Bay natural habitat. The client was over the moon thrilled with the results, calling the beautiful and enhancing the relationship to the beautiful coastline. Newport Back Bay Dunes is an example of Dale Waldo Landscape Architecture's philosophy of quality, sustainability, and community-driven landscape design.
